Dear Utah Physician Assistant Community,

As we close the chapter on 2024, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the incredible strides we have made together. This year, we embody the spirit of "defying gravity," much like Elphaba in the beloved musical Wicked. Our journey has been one of breaking barriers, soaring to new heights, and transforming the healthcare landscape in Utah.

Defying Gravity in Access to Care

Just as Elphaba defied expectations, we have defied the limitations that once hindered access to quality healthcare. Our commitment to improving access to care has been unwavering. Through innovative telehealth solutions, community outreach programs, and expanding our presence in underserved areas, we have ensured that more Utahns receive the care they need when needed. Our efforts have improved health outcomes and strengthened the trust and relationships we build with our patients.

Top of Practice and Training

In 2024, we have continued to push the boundaries of our practice and training. By embracing advanced practice roles and pursuing continuous education, we have demonstrated that our capabilities are "unlimited." Our dedication to professional growth has enabled us to provide the highest standard of care, significantly impacting the health and well-being of our communities. We have shown that when we aim high, we can achieve greatness.

Empowering Patients in Self-Health Efficacy

Empowering our patients to take charge of their health has been a cornerstone of our mission. Like Elphaba, who discovered her strength and potential, we have guided our patients to recognize their ability to manage their health effectively. We have fostered a culture of self-health efficacy through patient education, personalized care plans, and supportive follow-ups. Our patients are now more informed, engaged, and proactive in their health journeys, leading to better health outcomes and a higher quality of life.

The Future is Unlimited

As we look ahead to 2025, the future of our practice is indeed "unlimited." We are excited to continue our work in aligning our profession's title act from Physician Assistant to Physician Associate, reflecting the true scope and depth of our roles. This change will further elevate our profession and enhance the recognition we deserve.

Impact in Numbers

  • Access to Care: In 2024, PAs in Utah provided care to over 500,000 patients, significantly reducing wait times and improving access in rural and underserved areas.
  • Top of Practice: The average salary for PAs in Utah reached $119,832 per year, reflecting our profession's growing recognition and value.
  • Patient Outcomes: Our efforts in patient education and self-health efficacy have led to a 20% increase in patient adherence to treatment plans and a 15% reduction in hospital readmissions.

Successful Programs

  • University of Utah PA Program: This program has continued to excel, producing highly skilled graduates who significantly impact various healthcare settings across the state. The program's emphasis on primary care and community health has been instrumental in addressing the needs of underserved populations.
  • Weber State University and Utah Valley University PA Programs: We are thrilled to celebrate the graduation of the first cohorts from these programs in 2023 and 2024, respectively. These new graduates are already contributing to the healthcare workforce, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to our community.
  • Telehealth Initiatives: Our telehealth programs have expanded dramatically, providing critical care to remote and rural areas. These initiatives have not only improved access but also enhanced patient satisfaction and outcomes. Key successes include:
    • HB 159: This legislation streamlined the application process for telehealth services, allowing for greater flexibility and access across state lines.
    • Telehealth Network Expansion: We have increased the number of telehealth hubs, ensuring that even the most remote communities have access to specialist consultations and follow-up care.
    • Patient Education and Support: Our telehealth platforms now include comprehensive patient education modules, helping patients manage chronic conditions and understand their treatment plans better.
  • Community Outreach: Various community outreach programs have successfully promoted health education and preventive care. These programs have empowered patients with the knowledge and tools to manage their health effectively.

I wish each of you much success in the coming year. May you find renewed energy for advocacy, better healthcare delivery, and fulfillment in your careers. Together, we will continue to defy gravity, reaching new heights and making a lasting impact on the health of our communities.

With gratitude and best wishes,

Viet Le, DMSc MPAS PA-C
